Technical Analysis: Alcohol: 15%, pH: 3.68, Total Acidity: 5.5g/l
Vineyards: Handpicked from the Hickinbotham vineyard in Clarendon. This super premium vineyard is located in the foothills of McLaren Vale at an altitude of 300m above sea level. Here the grapes mature later than our other vineyards in McLaren Vale and possess a finer style of Shiraz.
Colour: Deep purple with red hues.
Aromatics: Lifted floral notes with ripe red berry fruits and a hint of white pepper.
Palate: Red raspberry and red currant fruits combine with some brambly spice which burst onto the front palate. The Syrah has a wonderful silky textured palate. Long and fine finish with fine tannins lingering.
Cellaring: Will reward cellaring for up to 10 years or more in correct conditions.
Winemakers Notes: After harvest the fruit was put through a sorting table. It was then crushed and the fruit had 3 days to cold soak, ensuring the full flavour and colour extraction. It then was fermented in an open fermenter for 12 days being carefully handled throughout this time, before being gently pressed. After pressing it was matured in French oak barrels of which 80% were new. Half of the barrels were puncheons and half were hogsheads.
This parcel was so fragrant and perfumed and quite different from our other vineyards, that we decided to release it as our first 'Syrah'. The fineness the wine possessed at a young age was extraordinary. We believe this wine highlights the diversity of McLaren Vale at its finest.
Bottled in July 2013.
